No matter how different our political views are, we can’t dispute the increase in violence across the country in the past few years. Every day, we hear about gun violence, hate crimes, gang fights, violence in schools, and crimes in everyday life. Violence does not discriminate.

This is a safety issue that requires action on several fronts, including within healthcare. All of us at American Nurse Journal extend our condolences to everyone affected by these events.

Takeaways: Gun injury has moved to the number one spot on the CDC’s list for causes of death in children between ages 1 and 19 years. Nurses and providers can make a difference in reducing firearm injury in their communities. Pediatric gun deaths, however, haven’t decreased. Focus on safety and education.
