I became an advocate for self-care among my colleagues and patients, emphasizing that to care for others effectively, we must first care for ourselves. It taught me the true meaning of empathy and the importance of holistic care. Being on the other side, now as a patient for the rest of my life, is rough.

Proper orientation increases patient confidence and decreases anxiety and escalation. If you’re working without O&M specialists, concentrate on safety (perform a patient-focused assessment, and implement fall prevention and patient education techniques) while ensuring adequate communication, proper guidance, and environmental orientation.

A BSN also opens the door to leadership opportunities and graduate education later in your career. If your facility doesn't offer formal training, ask about opportunities to precept with an experienced L&D nurse or attend continuing education workshops on obstetrics.
