Looking Towards a Brighter 2023 with Assistant Director of Admissions for Diversity Initiatives Alexander Murphy

Each new year provides the opportunity for a fresh start. A chance for us to reflect on the previous year and set new intentions to focus on a brighter tomorrow. I feel grateful to have joined the School of Nursing’s Office of Admissions team where I serve as the Assistant Director of Admissions for Diversity Initiatives and Recruitment. Leaving Florida and transitioning to Baltimore began seven months ago and gave me the opportunity to refresh and reinvent. I feel that I am just getting a grip on establishing a routine that allows me to reflect and enhance my emotional, mental, and physical well-being. Connecting with my community took some time, but I am excited to continue expanding my social network. My academic and professional background in dance allows me to connect with local choreographers and performers. I have been attending Hip-Hop Cyphers to learn more about the Baltimore Club dance style. My most recent endeavor is participating in an Adult Gymnastics night class to learn how to advance my tumbling and truly live out my All-Star Cheerleading fantasy.

On a more professional note, I am very excited to continue growing into my position within the School of Nursing’s Office of Admissions. I have thoroughly enjoyed connecting with students throughout their application and nursing journey. Hearing so many experiences and perspectives has allowed me to evaluate how I can be more creative and effective in my recruitment efforts and strategies. Our admissions recruitment team spoke with and visited several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). I believe that part of our responsibility in recruiting future leaders within health care is to meet students where they are to provide insight and guidance towards enhancing their nursing education. While continuing to increase the number of HBCUs and HSIs we attend, I am also looking forward to collaborating with other Johns Hopkins graduate programs, like the Carey School of Business and the Bloomberg School of Public Health, to expand diverse populations and communities present on campus and the health care workforce.

As our recruitment team continues to expand our initiatives and efforts to ensure we are recruiting students that are reflective of the populations that health care professionals serve in all communities. I am also excited to continue working with each of you as you explore and expand your nursing journey and careers. I believe 2023 is going to be a phenomenal year for both personal and professional growth!
